Main Street Four‑Point Approach®
The Main Street Four‑Point Approach® is a proven model for revitalizing downtowns by leveraging local assets—historic character, local businesses, and community pride. The four points work together to create a sustainable, community‑driven path to economic and social vitality.
1. Organization
Builds partnerships, consensus, and collaboration among stakeholders. A board, committees, volunteers, and a program director work together to manage the district, share responsibilities, and ensure broad community involvement.
2. Promotion
Strengthens the district’s image and boosts pride, consumer confidence, and investment. Through marketing, events, retail promotions, and storytelling, Promotion highlights what makes the district unique and draws people to shop, visit, and invest.
3. Design
Focuses on creating an attractive, safe, and welcoming environment. This includes improving buildings, storefronts, signage, public spaces, landscaping, window displays, and overall visual appeal. Design also supports historic preservation, good maintenance practices, and long‑term planning.
4. Economic Vitality
Strengthens existing businesses while attracting new ones. This includes supporting business growth, improving merchandising skills, filling vacant or underused spaces, and ensuring the district meets the needs of today’s consumers.
